
SMCC Men's Golf Opens Fall Season at Papago Invitational

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team opened its 2024 fall season at the Papago Invitational hosted by Arizona State University at Papago Golf Club on Sept. 16-17. The Cougars fared well, with Randy Weis, Adam Croix, and Jaxson Wright tying for 19th at 10-over, 223 over 54 holes as SMCC faced NCAA Division I competition.
SMCC squared off with NCAA Division I opponents from the host Sun Devils, the University of Colorado, the University of Tennessee, Grand Canyon University, Brigham Young University, San Diego State University, Oklahoma State University, and the University of New Mexico. Team scores were not calculated, and each player competed as an individual.
Weis carded scores of 75, 72, and 76 on the par-71 course. He posted four birdies in his second round and had two in his first and third rounds.
Croix posted scores of 77, 74, and 72. He recorded three birdies in his first round and closed with three birdies and an eagle over the final 18 holes.
Wright steadily moved up the leaderboard with scores of 82, 73, and 68. He had two birdies in his second round and four over his final round.
Luke Padilla moved up three spots in the third round to finish 26th at 12-over, 225, carding rounds of 72, 81, and 72. He had four birdies in his first round, one in the second, and two in the third.
James Rogers finished 31st at 33-over, 246, with rounds of 82, 84, and 80. He had one birdie in his first round.
