SMCC Softball Falls Twice at Arizona Western in Season Opener

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College softball team (0-2) lost 6-2 and 5-4 at Arizona Western in a non-conference doubleheader in Yuma on Feb. 20. Facing a team that had already played 11 games, the Cougars looked impressive as they started the 2021 campaign. In game one, freshman Alexa Key had two hits, including a triple, and Mia Stankiewicz had a double and an RBI, but the Matadors struck with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 deadlock. Five Cougars had multiple hits in the second game, led by Key's three, but the Matadors once again staged a comeback in the late innings to sweep the doubleheader.

Game One

Arizona Western struck for a run in the bottom of the first and doubled their lead in the fifth. That set the stage for a two-run SMCC sixth to tie the contest. However, the Matadors scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the 6-2 victory.

Key finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Stankiewicz also scored a run. Tara Lorona had the other Cougar RBI, and Jianna Martinez, Tori Van Arsdale, and Jaudrey Ah Quin all had base hits for SMCC. Destiny Apodaca recorded a sac bunt as well.

Christian Smith (0-1) tossed a complete game for SMCC, finishing with one walk and six earned runs.

Game Two

The Cougars totaled 13 hits and led 4-1 after the top of the sixth, but Arizona Western rallied again to spoil SMCC's opening day.

Key was 3-for-4 with a run scored, two RBIs, and her second triple of the day. Ah Quin hit her first home run of the year and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Lorona smashed two doubles in the loss, while Apodaca also had two hits. Tatumn Ellis had two hits for the Cougars and scored a run, Taylor Mount recorded her first hit in a Cougar uniform and Stankiewicz produced her second RBI of the day.

Van Arsdale started the game for SMCC, tossing six innings with four earned runs and a walk. Smith (0-2) took the loss in relief, giving up a run and two hits in the seventh.

The Cougars return to action on Mar. 2 with an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Paradise Valley Community College. Game one starts at 1 p.m.
