No. 15 SMCC Softball Rebonds with Sweep of Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (19-9, 19-7 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 8-0 and 11-2 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 20. In the first game, Jackie Traughber tossed a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts, and Tara Lorona hit a pair of home runs to give the Cougars the five-inning victory. In the second game, the Cougars totaled 13 hits in four innings, and Christian Smith scattered three hits and three walks to earn the win.

Game One

The Cougars totaled 10 hits, including five for extra bases, as they posted the 8-0 victory. That was more than enough to back up another solid performance from Traughber.

Traughber (12-5) scattered two hits and a walk over five innings to record her 12th win of the season. She fanned six and now has 83 K's and a 3.71 ERA in 100 innings.

Lorona finished 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs and her second and third home runs of the season. Alexa Key finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a run, an RBI and three stolen bases, while Jaudrey Ah Quin went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and her sixth home run of the season.

Smith hit a double and scored a run, Natalie Torres added a hit and an RBI and Taylor Mount scored a run, had an RBI and walked twice.

Game Two

The SMCC offense continued to roll against the Coyotes, as four Cougars recorded multiple hits, and the team totaled three doubles and three stolen bases.

Key remained perfect for the day, going 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. She leads the ACCAC with 26 steals on the season. 

Traughber finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Mia Stankiewicz went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a stolen base and a walk. Tori Van Arsdale added a double, an RBI and a run scored, and Tatumn Ellis added a two-run base hit.

Smith (7-4) did not allow an earned run in her five innings of work and had two strikeouts. She went 2-for-2 with three runs, a double, a stolen base and a walk to help her cause in the circle.

The No. 15 Cougars travel to Glendale CC for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 24. The first game starts at noon.
