No. 8 Cougar Softball Sweeps No. 2 Phoenix College

The No. 8 South Mountain Community College softball team (32-7, 26-4 ACCAC) defeated No. 2 Phoenix College 12-11 and 14-11 in an ACCAC road doubleheader on April 1. The Cougars rallied from an 11-7 deficit in the top of the seventh to score five runs and take a thrilling 12-11 victory in game one. In the second game, SMCC overcame a 9-7 deficit after the fourth inning with seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings to post a 14-11 victory. 

Game One Victory

The Cougars and Bears exchanged runs throughout the game until the dramatic seventh inning. Phoenix College led 5-2 after two innings and 7-5 after four frames. SMCC scratched across a run in the fifth and the sixth, but PC responded with three runs in their half of the sixth to set the stage. 

Freshman Iliana Munoz missed hitting for the cycle by a triple, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a home run. Freshman Brianna Garcia led SMCC with four hits and went 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a home run. 

Sophomore Anisa Reynolds was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and freshman Halle Hogan was 1-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. Freshman Mia Franco had two hits and two RBIs, and sophomore Annalise Chavez had two hits and scored a run. 

Freshman Mykenzie Flores tossed 1.1 innings of relief work to earn the win and improve to 7-2 on the year. Freshman Angelica Tello started the game for SMCC and went 4.0 innings with a strikeout. Freshman Adenira Marquez also saw time in the circle and went 1.2 innings. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC smacked seven extra-base hits, including five doubles, as the Cougars won 14-11 and swept the four-game season series with the Bears. 

Sophomore Makaiya Gomez led SMCC with four hits and finished 4-for-6 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Munoz went 2-for-6 with three runs, a solo home run and a double. 

Hogan hit the Cougars' second home run and finished 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs, and Garcia was 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBIs and two doubles. 

Sarah Potter and Franco each had two hits, with Potter recording an RBI, and Reynolds walked twice and scored a run. 

Reynolds tossed 5.0 innings to earn the win and improve to 11-3 on the season. She fanned four and walked five. Flores also appeared in the circle, and Tello earned her second save of the year with two innings of relief with one strikeout.
