SMCC Softball Falls to Pima CC, Sweeps Lake Region State

The South Mountain Community College softball team (6-5, 2-4 ACCAC) lost an ACCAC doubleheader against Pima CC on Mar. 5 but rebounded to sweep Lake Region State in a non-conference doubleheader on Mar. 6. Sophomore Iliana Munoz hit three home runs and finished 4 for 4 with five RBIs in game one against Pima CC, but the Aztecs used timely hitting to sweep the league twinbill. The following day, freshmen Taylor Christensen and Brianna Risley hit the first home runs of their SMCC careers, and Munoz blasted another deep fly as the Cougars swept the Royals. 

Pima CC Recap

Munoz blasted two two-run home runs, added a solo home run, and smashed a double in an 11-6 loss to Pima CC in game one of the doubleheader. However, the Aztecs hit four home runs over the seven frames to post the victory.  

Freshman Nadia Rascon finished 3 for 4 with an RBI single, sophomore Mia Franco drew two walks and scored twice, and freshman Dionna Leanio had a single and a stolen base. Taylor ChristensenSabrina ErranVanessa Philpot, and Elise Saucedo added singles in the loss. 

Sophomore Angelica Tello took the loss with 4.0 innings of work and allowed 11 hits and eight earned runs with one strikeout. Sophomore Adenira Marquez tossed 3.0 innings of relief with three hits, three earned runs, and two strikeouts. 

In game two of the doubleheader, Christensen did an excellent job limiting the Aztec offense. She worked around eight hits and two earned runs to strike out five in seven innings.  

Leanio finished 4 for 4 with an RBI single, and freshman Azlynn Madrid scored the team's lone run. 

Lake Region State Recap 

The Cougars exploded for 31 runs over eight innings and posted 22-4 and 9-1 victories over the Royals in five innings each. 

Christensen roped a two-run home run in their first inning and finished 1 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk.  

Freshman Sabrina Erran was 4 for 4 with two runs, four RBIs, and two doubles, while Franco was 2 for 3 with three runs, three RBIs, a double, and two stolen bases. 

Saucedo, Vanessa Philpot, and Michelle Balcazar added doubles in the win. Saucedo had two RBIs and scored a run, Philpot had two RBIs, a stolen base, and scored twice, while Balcazar also scored two times. 

Sophomore Mykenzie Flores earned the win with a complete-game performance. She allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out nine, setting a new career high. 

Risley blasted her first career home run, a two-run shot, to help the Cougars overcome an early 1-0 deficit in the second game of the doubleheader. She finished 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs. 

Freshman Jasmyne Campos also had two hits and added a run and an RBI. Leanio came off the bench to finish 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. Munoz hit a solo home run to give her six on the season. 

Flores earned her second win of the day with 3.0 innings of work. She fanned three and allowed one hit and one earned run. Marquez tossed the final two innings and allowed one hit.
