Glendale CC Edges SMCC Men's Soccer

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (1-6-1, 1-4-1 ACCAC) lost 4-3 to Glendale CC in an ACCAC road match on Saturday, Sept. 30. Sophomore Marco Amador scored his first two goals of the season, and freshman Atxel Medrano added a goal, but the Cougars could not complete the comeback against the Gauchos.

SMCC struck early in the contest as Medrano scored his third goal of the season unassisted early in the third minute. GCC would tie the match up in the first half's final minute to send the teams into halftime at 1-1.

In the second half, GCC struck twice in the opening 10 minutes of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Amador cut that advantage in half with a goal in the 68th minute. Medrano picked up an assist on the play, his team-leading second of the year.

GCC pushed the lead back to two with a goal in the 86th minute. Amador once again pulled SMCC within one, with his second goal of the match coming with two minutes left to play.

Freshman Anthony Sauceda played all 90 minutes in goal for SMCC, making eight saves to set a new season best.

SMCC finished with 11 shots in the match, putting eight on the frame, and had two corner kicks. Sophomore Fidel Moro saw the yellow card in the second match.
