Smith, Stankiewicz Sweep ACCAC Division II Weekly Softball Awards

Freshmen Christian Smith and Mia Stankiewicz won Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, on Mar. 8 after helping lead the South Mountain Community College softball team to league victories over Paradise Valley CC and Eastern Arizona last week. Smith went 2-0 with a 0.70 ERA and nine strikeouts in 10 innings of work, while Stankiewicz batted .750 in the four games with eight extra-base hits, eight runs, five stolen bases and 11 RBIs.

On Mar. 2, Smith tossed five innings and struck out a season-high six batters to earn the win in the second game of a doubleheader against the Pumas. Four days later, Smith scattered four hits and one run over five innings to pick up her second win of the week in a 13-1 victory at Eastern Arizona.

For the season, Smith is 2-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 16.1 innings of work. 

Stankiewicz feasted on opposing pitchers all week, finishing 10-for-14 at the plate with two home runs, four doubles and two triples during the four games. Against PVCC, she went 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases and a home run in the first game and then added another two stolen bases, a run and an RBI in the second win.

At Eastern Arizona, she smacked a grand slam in the seventh inning and finished with a triple, three runs and five RBIs in a 13-3 victory. In the second game, she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles, a triple, two runs and three RBIs. 

Stankiewicz is batting .545 with five doubles, two triples, two home runs, nine runs, 13 RBIs, and five stolen bases for the season. 

Smith, Stankiewicz and the Cougars return to action on Mar. 9 with a home doubleheader against Yavapai College. Game one starts at 1 p.m.
