SMCC Softball Defeats Arizona Christian in Non-Conference Action

The South Mountain Community College softball team (10-8) defeated Arizona Christian University 20-8 in a non-conference road contest on Monday, Mar. 18. The Cougars totaled 19 hits and 15 stolen bases over the seven innings, with sophomore Iliana Munoz hitting a home run and sophomore Vanessa Philpot and freshman Azlynn Madrid leading SMCC with three hits. 

SMCC led early, but ACU tied the game at 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Cougars responded with three runs in the third, but ACU again tied the game at the end of the fourth. From there, SMCC out-scored ACU 14-2, including nine runs in the top of the seventh. 

Philpot finished 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Munoz was 1 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs, two walks, and one stolen base. Madrid was 3 for 3 with three runs, two RBIs, a double, and a stolen base. 

Freshman Sabrina Erran led SMCC with four RBIs and added three runs and a double, and sophomore Mekaila Smith was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double. 

Freshmen Michelle Balcazar and Jasmyne Campos each had two hits, with Campos scoring a run and Balcazar driving in one. Fellow rookie Elise Saucedo posted three RBIs, three stolen bases, two runs, and a triple, and Dionna Leanio scored four runs and stole five bases. 

Freshmen Marissa Quihuis and Alex Paboucek had two stolen bases and scored a run. 

Sophomore Mykenzie Flores (4-1) earned the win with 4.0 innings of relief work. She allowed one earned run and struck out two. Sophomore Angelica Tello started the game for SMCC and went 3.0 innings with three earned runs and three K's.
