SMCC Softball Splits ACCAC Doubleheader with CGCC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (20-14, 15-13 ACCAC) split an ACCAC doubleheader at the SMCC Softball Diamond on April 16. In game one, the Cougars fell 9-1 in five innings before posting a 10-5 victory in game two. Sophomore Mykenzie Flores tossed a complete game and held the Coyotes to three hits to help the Cougars split the doubleheader and claim the season series with the CGCC. 

Game One Recap

The Coyotes scored four runs in the first and added three in the fourth and two in the fifth to post the 9-1, five-inning victory. 

Sophomore Iliana Munoz scored SMCC's lone run, coming in on an RBI ground out from freshman Sabrina Erran

Sophomore Mekaila Smith had two hits, and sophomore Mia Franco had the Cougars' fourth hit. 

Sophomore Angelica Tello (5-7) allowed nine hits and seven earned runs over five innings to take the loss in the circle. She fanned four and walked two. 

Game Two Recap 

Aside from a five-run fifth inning, Flores was outstanding in the circle and improved to 8-1 in the season. She worked around three hits and nine walks and had three strikeouts. None of the five Coyote runs were earned. 

The Cougars scored six runs in the second to give Flores an early advantage. Smith started the frame with a double, sophomore Vanessa Philpot reached on an error, and freshman Michelle Balcazar delivered an RBI single to bring home Smith. Freshman Elise Saucedo hit an RBI single to score Philpot and freshman Azlynn Madrid scored Balcazar with an RBI groundout. 

After Franco drew a walk, Munoz cleared the bases with a three-run home run for her 14th of the season and 30th of her SMCC career. 

In the fourth, Franco drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Philpot, and a Coyote error allowed two more runs to score in the frame. SMCC tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double from Saucedo. 

Saucedo and Balcazar led the Cougars with three hits apiece. Saucedo was 3 for 3 with two runs, two RBIs, and a double, while Balcazar was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. 

Munoz finished 2 for 5 with her three-run blast, and Philpot scored three times after drawing three walks. Franco also drew three walks and scored once, along with an RBI.
