SMCC Softball Rallies to Sweep PVCC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (14-12, 9-11 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College on April 4 at the SMCC Softball Field. The Cougars posted a 9-1, five-inning victory in game one as freshman Nadia Rascon finished 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs. In the second game, SMCC overcame a 6-1 deficit to post a 7-6 victory as freshman Sabrina Erran hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars led 5-0 through three innings and scored four in their half of the fifth to post the 9-1, five-inning victory. Rascon doubled in the second, added a second in the third, and homered in the fifth. She is batting .508 with six home runs, 26 RBIs, and four doubles in 25 games. 

Sophomore Iliana Munoz had an RBI groundout in the first, and freshman Dionna Leanio added a two-run single in the second. Munoz added a double in the fifth, and Leanio posted a stolen base in the first. 

Erran scored a pair of runs and stole a base, freshman Azlynn Madrid had an RBI single, and sophomore Mekaila Smith was 2 for 3 with an RBI. 

Sophomore Mykenzie Flores (6-1) tossed a complete game to earn the win in the circle. She allowed four hits and one walk to go with one strikeout.  

Game Two Recap

The Pumas came out firing, hitting a two-run home run in the first and a three-run home run in the fifth to lead 6-1. From there, SMCC mounted a comeback that produced six runs over the final three innings, culminating in Erran's walk-off RBI single. 

Munoz hit a solo home run in the first and smacked an RBI double in the sixth. She finished 2 for 3 with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk. Fellow sophomore Vanessa Philpot had the game-tying RBI single in the sixth. 

Erran went 2 for 4 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk, Leanio finished 3 for 5 with a run and a stolen base, and freshman Taylor Christensen 2 for 4 with a run. Rascon walked in all four of her plate appearances. 

Sophomore Angelica Tello (3-6) earned the win with three innings of relief work. She allowed four hits and three earned runs to go with one strikeout. Sophomore Adenira Marquez started the game for SMCC and went 4.0 innings with three hits, three earned runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.
