Cougar Softball Records Doubleheader Sweep at Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (6-4, 6-2 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 11-2 (5) and 10-2 (6) in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Mar. 16. In the first game, the Cougars scored multiple runs in three innings, and Tara Lorona and Tori Van Arsdale had multiple hits and RBIs. The offense continued to roll in the second game, as Van Arsdale smacked her first home run of the season, and Jackie Traughber had three extra-base hits. 

Game One

The Cougars struck for two runs in the first and then scored six times in the fifth to post the run-rule victory. 

Lorona finished 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, a double, a triple and a stolen base. Van Arsdale was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a double, Traughber added three RBIs and a steal, and Mia Stankiewicz scored three runs and stole two bases. As a team, the Cougars finished with 11 stolen bases in the win.

Traughber (3-1) earned the win in the circle with a complete-game performance. 

Game Two

The offense continued to click in the second game, scoring multiple runs in four frames to lift the Cougars to its second run-rule win of the day. 

Traughber, the team's designated player, finished 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, two doubles, a triple and a stolen base. Van Arsdale finished 2-for-2 with two runs, three RBIs, a double, a home run and a stolen base.

Stankiewicz went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a triple, while Taylor Mount and Natalie Torres had multiple hits. Destiny Apodaca went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases. The team recorded six stolen bases in the win and now has 49 in 10 games this season. 

In the circle, Christian Smith (3-3) earned the win with a complete-game performance. She had five strikeouts, and no walks with one earned run. 

The Cougars return to action with a home doubleheader against Arizona Western on Mar. 20. The first game starts at noon.
