Cougars Extend Winning Streak to Seven with Sweep of Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (15-7, 15-5 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert Community College 11-9 and 10-6 on April 10 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader. In the first game, Mia StankiewiczJaudrey Ah Quin and Tori Van Arsdale smashed home runs, and SMCC held off a Coyote rally in the seventh. In the second game, Alexa Key and Destiny Apodaca had three hits, and the Cougars totaled five extra-base hits to back up a complete game from Christian Smith and sweep the doubleheader.

Game One

The Cougars scored 10 runs over the first three innings, and Jackie Traughber (9-3) threw a complete game, slamming the door on a CGCC rally in the seventh. 

SMCC finished with six extra-base hits in the win, and three Cougars finished with three hits: Stankiewicz, Key and Tara Lorona. Stankiewicz finished 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, five RBIs and two runs. Key was 3-for-5 with two runs, while Lorona was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored. 

Traughber and Van Arsdale each had two hits, with Traughber scoring twice and collecting a double and Van Arsdale scoring two runs to go with her solo home run. Ah Quinn blasted a three-run home run, and Taylor Mount stole two bases in the win. 

In the circle, Traughber earned the win and struck out six batters over seven innings. She worked around 11 hits and three walks to improve to 9-3 on the season. 

Game Two

In the second game, SMCC scored four runs in the second inning to take the lead for good and extended its winning streak to seven games. 

Key had three hits again, finishing 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs, a triple and a stolen base. Apodaca went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double and two stolen bases to raise her season total to a team-high 21 on the season. 

Natalie Torres finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Stankiewicz hit her fifth triple of the season and had two RBIs. Traughber added her sixth double of the season, and Van Arsdale picked up two RBIs. 

In the circle, Smith (6-4) threw a complete game with three strikeouts and four walks to earn the win. 

The Cougars return home on April 13 to host Glendale Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
