Offensive Erupts in SMCC Softball Sweep at CGCC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (14-10, 7-7 ACCAC) swept an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC on Saturday, Mar. 5. The Cougars recorded 13 hits, including five for extra bases, and scored five in the seventh to claim a 14-11 victory in game one. In the second game, the offense continued to roll, racking up 18 hits in a 17-7, five-inning win.

Game One Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 9-3 lead through five innings but trailed 10-9 at the start of the seventh. The Cougars scored five runs and held off a Coyote rally to win 14-11.

Kate Hogan and Tara Lorona had three hits to lead SMCC. Hogan went 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, while Lorona was 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a walk.

Freshman Annalise Chavez finished 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs and four RBIs. She is tied for the team lead with seven home runs.

Sophomore Jaudrey Ah Quin also homered in the victory, raising her season total to six. She scored a season-high four runs and added two RBIs.

Freshman Monica Chon was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Fellow rookie Carolina Olivas added a double and a run scored.

Christian Smith (6-2) earned the win in the circle with six innings of work. She struck out two and allowed nine earned runs to record her sixth win of the season. Mariah Martinez recorded her third save of the season with an inning of relief.

Game Two Recap

The Cougars finished with 18 hits, including seven for extra bases, to defeat CGCC 17-7 in five innings and sweep the doubleheader.

Freshman Kayliana Sablan led the Cougars with four hits, picking up a double, an RBI and a stolen base to go with two runs scored.

Martinez (4-3) had a solid game at the plate and in the circle for SMCC. She went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBIs, a double and a home run and tossed five innings with four earned runs allowed to record her fourth win of the season.

Lorona also finished with three hits and added three runs, three RBIs, a stolen base and a triple, while Ah Quin hit a double and scored three times.

Olivas, Chavez and Hogan each recorded two hits in the win. Hogan finished with two runs and two RBIs, Olivas added a double and two RBIs, and Chavez scored two runs and had three RBIs.
