SMCC Softball Sweeps Pima CC on Sophomore Day

The South Mountain Community College softball team (32-22, 23-19 ACCAC) defeated Pima CC 14-10 and 9-1 (5 innings) on April 30 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader. The Cougars celebrated Sophomore Day with an offensive flourish as SMCC racked up 15 hits in game one, including a key two-run home run from Lauren Russell, while Kate Hogan hit a pair of home runs and Tara Lorona added one of her own in game two. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings and led 7-3 after four. However, the Aztecs rallied for three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the contest. SMCC responded with a seven-run sixth and held off Pima CC in the seventh to post the 14-10 victory. 

With SMCC having regained an 8-7 advantage in the sixth, Russell deposited a two-run blast over the fence in left for her ninth home run. She finished 2-for-3 with a run, a double and three RBIs.  

Hogan went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs, five RBIs, a double and a stolen base, and Jazzlyn Joaquin finished 3-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and a double. 

Kayliana Sablan and Maria Carias had a pair of hits in the win. Sablan went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a steal, while Carias was 2-for-2 with a run scored.  

Carolina Olivas scored three times and had a stolen base, and Lorona added a run and two RBIs. 

Christian Smith (16-8) picked up the win with a complete-game performance. She allowed five earned runs and fanned three in seven innings of work. 

Game Two Recap 

SMCC scored five in the first, two in the second and two in the fourth to post a 9-1, five-inning victory in its final home game of the 2022 season. 

Hogan was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs and her 12th and 13th home runs. She leads the squad with 20 doubles and 77 RBIs on the season. 

Olivas also had a multi-hit effort in the win, going 2-for-3 with a run. Lorona hit a solo home run, her eighth of the year, stole a base and scored twice. Joaquin added her second double of the day, and Annalise Chavez picked up a steal. 

Rylie Atherton (9-7) tossed a two-hit complete game to earn the win in the circle. She fanned five and allowed one earned run to record her ninth win of the season.
