No. 6 SMCC Softball Sweeps Central Arizona

The No. 6 South Mountain Community College softball team (36-7, 30-4 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC home doubleheader from Central Arizona on April 8, winning 5-1 and 9-6 to sweep the season series with the Vaqueras. Freshman Angelica Tello tossed a complete game with six strikeouts, and sophomore Anisa Reynolds and freshman Sarah Potter blasted two-run home runs in the game one victory. In the second game, freshman Brianna Garcia hit a pair of home runs to raise her season total to 24 and freshman Halle Hogan added a three-run double to complete the sweep. 

Game One Recap

After CAC broke the scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fourth, SMCC responded with three runs in the fourth, with two runs coming from Reynolds' two-run blast. Potter then added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. 

Tello allowed just three hits and no walks in seven strong innings to improve to 12-1 on the season. 

Reynolds hit her 21st home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs to raise her season RBI total to 68. Potter unloaded her seventh home run of the season and picked up RBIs 27 and 28. 

Hogan led SMCC with two hits in the win and added two runs, a double and an RBI. Freshman Vanessa Philpot also had a double, and Garcia added a single and a run scored. 

Game Two Recap 

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a three-run double from Hogan in the first. Sophomore Makaiya Gomez and Garcia then hit back-to-back home runs in the second to give the Cougars a 6-1 cushion.

Central Arizona pushed two runs across in the third and one in the fourth to draw within 6-4 before Garcia blasted a three-run home run in the fifth to give SMCC a 9-4 advantage. The Vaqueras added two runs in the seventh before Reynolds slammed the door on the rally to preserve the SMCC victory. 

Garcia finished 2-for-5 with three runs, and her four RBIs raised her season total to 72. Gomez was 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, two walks and her 17th home run. 

Hogan was a perfect 3-for-3 with the three RBIs and a walk, and freshman Iliana Munoz was 1-for-3 with two runs and two walks. Reynolds and Potter also had two hits, and sophomore Annalise Chavez finished with a double and a run scored. 

Reynolds tossed a complete game in the circle to improve to 12-3 on the season. She fanned five, walked two and allowed one earned run in seven innings.
