No. 4 SMCC Softball Sweeps Pima CC, Wins ACCAC Title

The No. 4 South Mountain Community College softball team (45-8, 41-5 ACCAC) defeated Pima CC 12-1 (5 innings) and 8-5 in an ACCAC road doubleheader in Tucson on April 27. Freshman Iliana Munoz went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs and six RBIs in the game-one victory. In game two, freshman Brianna Garcia hit her league-leading 28th home run and added two doubles and five RBIs as the Cougars claimed the ACCAC title for the first time in program history. 

Game One Recap

SMCC scored four in the first and five in the second to take an early 9-0 lead. The Cougars added a single run in the third, fourth and fifth to post the run-rule victory. 

Munoz hit her 11th and 12th home runs and recorded RBIs 44-50 for the season. The double was her 17th of the year, and the six RBIs tied a season-best. 

Sophomore Makaiya Gomez, sophomore Anisa Reynolds, freshman Mia Franco, sophomore Jessica Gordon and sophomore Annalise Chavez all had two hits in the win. Franco and Reynolds recorded a double and scored twice, Gomez and Chavez scored twice, and Gordon had a pair of RBIs.

Franco and Gordon also had stolen bases, Garcia had an RBI double, and freshman Halle Hogan had the team's fifth double and scored a run. 

Reynolds improved to 17-3 on the season with a complete-game effort. She fanned three, walked one and allowed one earned run over five innings. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars led 4-1 after two, and the Aztecs cut the deficit to 4-3 after three innings. SMCC responded with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. Pima CC got back two runs in the fifth but could not get any closer. 

Freshman Angelica Tello improved to 17-2 on the season with four innings of work in the circle. She had one strikeout and allowed four hits and one earned run. Freshman Mykenzie Flores earned her second save of the season with three innings of relief work. She had two strikeouts and allowed two earned runs. 

At the plate, Garcia drove five runs to raise her season total to a league-leading 91. She also continues to lead the ACCAC in home runs after blasting her 28th in the victory. 

Munoz picked up where she left off in game one, finishing 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBIs and a triple. Franco hit her second double of the day and scored a run, and Gomez scored twice. Freshman Vanessa Philpot and Gordon also scored runs for SMCC.
