Jhoan Soto Earns Second Team All-Region I Division II Honors

Freshman forward Jhoan Soto of the South Mountain Community College men's soccer team earned Second Team All-Region I Division II honors for his performance in the 2024 season as voted upon by the league's coaches. Soto led SMCC with six goals, 15 points, 41 shots, and 32 shots on goal as the Cougars recorded victories over GateWay CC and Chandler-Gilbert CC and posted draws with the Geckos and Mesa CC. His six goals and 15 points were the most by a Cougar in a single season since SMCC restarted the program in 2022.

Cougar Men's Soccer Wraps Up Season against Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-12-2) wrapped up its 2024 campaign with a 4-0 loss to Scottsdale CC on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the SMCC Soccer Field. Freshman Aaron Vazquez led the charge offensively for SMCC, finishing with three shots and putting two on the frame. In goal, freshman Manuel Lopez made a pair of saves.

SMCC Men's Soccer Stays Busy with ACCAC Slate

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-11-2, 2-11-2 ACCAC) as they prepare for Sophomore Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, with a 9 a.m. match against Scottsdale CC. The Cougars suffered a pair of narrow 1-0 defeats to Chandler-Gilbert CC and Mesa CC, played to a 2-2 draw against Gateway CC, and performed admirably at home against nationally ranked opponents Pima CC and Phoenix College.

SMCC Men's Soccer Falls 5-3 to Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-7-1, 2-7-1 ACCAC) lost 5-3 to No. 20 Glendale CC in an ACCAC match at the SMCC Soccer Field on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead 15 minutes into the match through goals from Oscar Jimenez and Jhoan Soto, but the Gauchos fought back with four goals in the second half to post the victory.

SMCC Men's Soccer Falls to Scottsdale CC, Paradise Valley CC

September 25, 2024

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-6-1, 2-6-1 ACCAC) lost 4-0 to Scottsdale CC on Sept. 21 and 3-2 to Paradise Valley CC on Sept. 24 in a pair of ACCAC road matches. Freshman goalkeeper Manuel Lopez made eight saves in the first half, and freshman Oswaldo Rodriguez made seven stops in the second half of the loss to the Fighting Artichokes. Three days later, freshmen Jhoan Soto and Kenneth Osuna each had a goal and an assist as the Pumas narrowly defeated the Cougars.

SMCC Men's Soccer Falls to Nationally Ranked Phoenix College

September 19, 2024

The South Mountain commuity College men's soccer team (2-4-1, 2-4-1 ACCAC) lost 5-0 to nationally ranked Phoenix College in an ACCAC road contest on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Freshman goalkeeper Manuel Lopez made 18 saves for the Cougars, who nearly held the Bears scoreless in the first half.

SMCC Men's Soccer Defeats GateWay CC 9-0

September 16, 2024

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-3-1, 2-3-1 ACCAC) defeated GateWay CC 9-0 in an ACCAC match at the SMCC Soccer Field on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Cougars scored three goals in the first half and six in the second to dispel the Geckos. Freshman Aaron Vazquez scored the match's first two goals, and freshman Jhoan Soto and sophomore Josh Marin finished with a goal and two assists. Four players finished with a goal and an assist: sophomores Gylain Ahadi, sophomore Kevin Urias, freshman Mauricio Guerrero, and freshman Oscar Jimenez.

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (1-3-1, 1-3-1 ACCAC) fell 11-2 to nationally ranked Pima CC in an ACCAC contest in Tucson on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Cougars struck first in the contest as freshman Oscar Jimenez scored unassisted in the second minute. In the second half, freshman Mauricio Guerrero scored in the 61st minute off an assist from freshman Mauricio Fuentes.

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (1-2-1, 1-2-1 ACCAC) played to a 1-1 draw with No. 15 Mesa CC in an ACCAC contest on Saturday, Sept. 7. Freshman forward Aaron Vazquez scored the game-tying goal in the 79th minute off an assist from freshman Alexis Gutierrez as the Cougars rallied late against the nationally ranked Thunderbirds.

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (1-2-0, 1-2-0 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 2-1 in an ACCAC contest at the SMCC Soccer Field on Saturday, Aug. 31. Sophomore Josh Marin broke a 1-1 deadlock with a goal in the 69th minute off a feed from Oscar Hernandez to help lift SMCC to its first win over the Coyotes since the 2016 campaign.

August 28, 2024

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-2-0 ACCAC) lost 2-1 to Glendale CC in an ACCAC road contest on Tuesday, Aug. 27. After the Gauchos sprung for a pair of goals in the first half, SMCC played with some much better determination over the final 45 minutes and got one goal back courtesy of a GCC own-goal in the 73rd minute.

SMCC Men's Soccer Opens 2024 Season vs. PVCC

August 26, 2024

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ACCAC) lost 5-1 to Paradise Valley Community College at the SMCC Soccer Field on Saturday, Aug. 24. Freshman Jhoan Soto scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute and had a match-high six shots in the Cougars' 2024 season opener.
