The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-4-1, 2-4-1 ACCAC) lost 5-0 to nationally ranked Phoenix College in an ACCAC road contest on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Freshman goalkeeper Manuel Lopez made 18 saves for the Cougars, who nearly held the Bears scoreless in the first half.
The Cougars held PC off the scoreboard until the waning moments of the 42nd minute. The Bears would add a second before halftime and produce three goals in the second half to post the victory.
Lopez had five stops in the first half and 13 in the second to set a new season high. He has 40 saves and a .667 save percentage in 540 minutes this season.
Freshman Jhoan Soto led SMCC with three shots, and fellow rookie Oscar Jimenez added a pair. Sophomore Josh Marin and freshman Mauricio Guerrero each saw the yellow card.
SMCC committed 13 fouls and had one corner kick.
