GCC Edges SMCC Men's Soccer 2-1

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-2-0 ACCAC) lost 2-1 to Glendale CC in an ACCAC road contest on Tuesday, Aug. 27. After the Gauchos sprung for a pair of goals in the first half, SMCC played with some much better determination over the final 45 minutes and got one goal back courtesy of a GCC own-goal in the 73rd minute. 

GCC struck in the sixth minute and closed the half with a goal in the 42nd minute to take a 2-0 lead into the break. In between, freshman Mauricio Fuentes blasted a shot destined for the upper-right corner that required a daft parry from the Gaucho goalkeeper. 

In the second half, freshmen Jhoan Soto and Mauricio Guerrero worked a give-and-go to set up Guerrero in front of goal to the left of the frame. However, the GCC goalkeeper came up with another save to keep SMCC off the scoreboard. 

Finally, in the 73rd minute, the Cougars broke through to cut the lead to 2-1. Sophomore Kevin Urias took a feed from Soto and fired a shot toward the goal that a Gaucho defender deflected into the net. 

In goal, freshman Manuel Lopez made a pair of saves. Soto, freshman Kris Valenzuela, and sophomore Danny Youbengue saw yellow cards. SMCC finished with 10 shots, two corner kicks, and 17 fouls in the contest.
