SMCC Men's Soccer Falls to Scottsdale CC, Paradise Valley CC

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-6-1, 2-6-1 ACCAC) lost 4-0 to Scottsdale CC on Sept. 21 and 3-2 to Paradise Valley CC on Sept. 24 in a pair of ACCAC road matches. Freshman goalkeeper Manuel Lopez made eight saves in the first half, and freshman Oswaldo Rodriguez made seven stops in the second half of the loss to the Fighting Artichokes. Three days later, freshmen Jhoan Soto and Kenneth Osuna each had a goal and an assist as the Pumas narrowly defeated the Cougars.

The Cougars trailed 1-0 at halftime, but three SCC goals in the second half put the match out of reach. 

Lopez made eight saves over the first 45 minutes, and Rodriguez made seven stops in the second half. 

Freshman Aaron Vazquez led SMCC with four shots, putting three on goal. Osuna and sophomore Josh Marin had a pair of shots on goal, and Angel VelazquezGylain Ahadi, Soto, and Jose Diaz recorded one shot on frame. 

SMCC had 12 shots, six corner kicks, and 14 fouls in the contest. Danny Youbengue, Soto, Diaz and the SMCC bench saw yellow cards. 

Paradise Valley CC Recap

The Cougars led 1-0 early after a goal from Osuna and tied the contest with less than 30 seconds to play in the first half. However, the Pumas scratched across the winning goal in the 63rd minute on a long-distance strike to earn the 3-2 victory. 

Osuna's goal in the 19th minute was his first of the season, and his helper on Soto's goal in the 45th minute was also his first year. He and Soto worked give-and-go connections to set up both strikes, beating the Puma goalkeeper to the right post with each salvo. 

Soto recorded his team-leading fourth goal and third assist in the defeat. Freshman Oscar Jimenez led SMCC with three shots, putting two on goal. Freshman Mauricio Guerrero, sophomore Kevin Urias, and freshman Kris Valenzuela each added a shot. 

In goal, Lopez made 12 saves over the 90 minutes for his second-most stops of the season. He has 60 saves, a .714 save percentage, and a 3.20 goals-against-average in 675 minutes this year.  

SMCC had eight shots and six fouls in the contest. There were no yellow cards.
