SMCC Men's Soccer Defeats GateWay CC 9-0

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-3-1, 2-3-1 ACCAC) defeated GateWay CC 9-0 in an ACCAC match at the SMCC Soccer Field on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Cougars scored three goals in the first half and six in the second to dispel the Geckos. 

Freshman Aaron Vazquez scored the match's first two goals, and freshman Jhoan Soto and sophomore Josh Marin finished with a goal and two assists. Four players finished with a goal and an assist: sophomores Gylain Ahadi, sophomore Kevin Urias, freshman Mauricio Guerrero, and freshman Oscar Jimenez.

GateWay CC had the match's first scoring chance, but the SMCC defense and goalkeeper Manuel Lopez stifled a breakaway and blocked a shot on the frame. 

A few minutes later, Vazquez scored his first goal off an assist from Marin in the left side of the penalty area. Roughly three minutes later, Vazquez headed home his second goal of the match from an assist from freshman Alexis Esparza

Kouki Kurimoto scored his first goal of the year in the 37th minute, burying a cross from Soto inside the left post. 

In the second half, Urias headed home the Cougars' fourth goal of the day off an assist from Marin in the 50th minute. About nine minutes later, Urias fed a ball to Mauricio Guerrero to give SMCC a 5-0 advantage. 

In the 62nd minute, Soto hit a looping ball over the goalkeeper's head, and Jimenez registered an assist. Soto then recorded his second assist as he played a cross through the goal mouth that Ahadi tapped in at the far post. 

Jimenez scored in the 73rd minute off an assist from Ahadi, and Marin concluded the team's scoring with a goal in the 79th minute off an assist from Guerrero. 

The Cougars finished with 35 shots in the match and put 21 on the frame. Lopez started the game for SMCC and played the first half. In the second half, Oswaldo Rodriguez made three saves in goal.  

SMCC had seven corner kicks and committed five fouls. Kevin Soto went into the book with a yellow card in the 45th minute.
