SMCC Women's Soccer Downs Glendale CC 5-0

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team (1-2) defeated Glendale Community College 5-0 in a non-conference contest at SMCC on Saturday, Sept. 3. Freshman Kayla Garcia netted a pair of goals, both coming in the first half, and freshman Jordan Whitaker made six saves in net as the Cougars posted their first victory since the 2019 season. 

Garcia scored a brace before halftime to give SMCC a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes. She opened her account for the season with a strike off a feed from freshman Valeria Rodriguez. She slid a pass up the right side of the Gaucho defense, and Garcia deposited it in the net to the right of the GCC goalkeeper. 

Moments before the halftime whistle, Garcia doubled her tally off an assist from Aline Cota. She slipped a pass up the middle for a streaking Garcia, who beat the diving goalkeeper to the left corner. 

In the second half, freshman Alicia Nicholson posted her first goal of the season off an assist from Samantha Zazueta. Nicholson received a pass up the middle of the defense and used her left foot to beat the goalkeeper to her left. 

Lucy Millan scored to make it 4-0 in SMCC's favor midway through the second half. She received an assist from Madai Seperich, who fed her a pass that she blasted into the roof of the goal. 

Rodriguez recorded the final Cougar tally of the day, finishing an assist from Garcia to the near post. 

SMCC finished with 15 shots for the game and placed 11 on the frame. The Cougars totaled seven fouls, five corners and three offsides during the 90 minutes. 

Whitaker recorded her first career shutout with six stops in net. GCC finished with 11 shots overall and added five fours. The SMCC defense held the Gauchos without a corner kick.
