Fourth-Quarter Rally Sends SMCC Women’s Hoops Past Tohono O’odham CC

Trailing 66-61 after 30 minutes of play, the South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (12-13) defeated Tohono O'odham Community College 89-85 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Feb. 22. Four Cougars scored in double-figures in the win as the team shot 49 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from 3-point range.

SMCC held a 43-41 lead at halftime, but a 25-18 third quarter put the Jegos ahead to start the final period. From there, the Cougars mounted an impressive rally and outscored Tohono O'odham 28-18 over the last 10 minutes.

Prima Chellis led the Cougars with 30 points, the sixth time she has scored at least 30 in a game this season. She was 5 of 13 from the field, but knocked down a season-high 18 free throws and added two 3-pointers. Chellis also finished with a team-high 15 rebounds, grabbing eight on the offensive glass.

Christina Willis posted a season-high 22 points, nine field goals and two 3-pointers in the win. She also tied a season-best with five assists and added four steals.

Arianna Sanders came off the bench to knock down six 3-pointers. She finished with 18 points, two steals and a rebound. Hallie Price was the fourth Cougar in double-figures, scoring 11 points to go with six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

South Mountain Community College closes out the regular season with a home game against Mesa Community College on Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m.
