SMCC Women's Hoops Opens Season against Southern Nevada

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (0-1) lost 100-46 to Southern Nevada in a non-conference contest at the SMCC Gym on Saturday, Nov. 4. Redshirt freshman Janae Byrd led SMCC with 11 points, freshman Mimi Miller had nine, and freshman Chloe Wiley added eight as the Cougars fell to the Coyotes in their 2023-24 season opener. 

SMCC trailed 53-21 at halftime and fell 47-25 in the second half. The Cougars shot 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the field and 10-of-14 attempts (71.4 percent) from the free-throw line. They added 39 rebounds, 11 assists, and eight steals in defeat. 

Byrd finished 3-of-10 from the field and connected on a 3-pointer and four free throws. She added three rebounds, an assist, and three steals in 35 minutes. 

Miller was 4-for-8 from the field and knocked down a 3-pointer, and she led SMCC with three assists and added two steals. Wiley was 2-of-7 from the floor and made four free throws. She added five rebounds, two steals, and an assist. 

Freshman Ashya Russell was second on the team with seven rebounds, and freshman Carissa Collier had four points, five rebounds, and two assists. 

Sophomore Miriam Traore came off the bench to grab eight rebounds and finished with five points and two assists. Sophomore Daziane Stevenson added six points and two rebounds off the bench for SMCC.
