Cougar Women's Hoops Edges Chandler-Gilbert CC

The SMCC women's basketball team defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 64-62 on Nov. 30 in an ACCAC game at the SMCC Gym. Sophomore Myla Lee hit a corner 3-pointer with less than a minute to play for the game-winning basket, and freshman Nyese Jones scored a season-high 24 points as the Cougars held off a Coyote rally. 

SMCC trailed by one after the first quarter, but outscored CGCC by five in the second to take a 30-26 lead into halftime. The Coyotes cut the lead to three after 30 minutes and took a lead midway through the fourth before the Cougars rallied for the victory. 

The Cougars shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field and 40 percent (6-of-15) from 3-point range. SMCC had 12 steals, 12 assists and three blocks to go with 30 rebounds. 

Jones finished 6-of-12 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the win. She added two assists, two 3-pointers, two steals, and a rebound. Lee posted seven points, five rebounds, three assists and that crucial 3-pointer. 

Freshman Daziane Stevenson came off the bench to score a season-high nine points. She added four rebounds, two steals, a 3-pointer and an assist. Sophomore Andrea Willeto finished with eight points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block, and sophomore Star Anderson added five points, two assists and a steal. 

Sophomore Genesis Adams led SMCC with seven rebounds, including three on the offensive glass. She added four points, two blocks, two steals, and an assist.
