SMCC Beach Volleyball Sweeps the NAU Club Team

The South Mountain Community College beach volleyball team defeated the NAU Club Team 4-1 and 4-1 in a pair of contests at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday, Mar. 3. Cougar head coach Patrick Mooney noted that SMCC played outstanding in their two matches as they improved to 4-4 on the season. 

"Today was one of the best coaching days in my career regarding student-athletes implementing what we have been working on in practice. Everyone played great today," said Mooney.

In the first match, the Cougars scored three dual victories and a forfeit victory in the No. 5 pairs. A pair of SMCC tandems posted their third-straight wins in dual matches. 

Sophomore Emily Wilson and freshman Daisy Motes won in straight sets (21-13, 21-18) as the No. 2 pairs, and the No. 3 pairs of freshmen Rylee Pitts and Nichole Gary won in straight sets as well (21-19, 21-17). 

Freshmen Shayna Simmers and Shandi Allison posted a three-set victory as the No. 4 pairs: 21-9, 18-21, 15-13. 

In the second match, the Cougars' No. 1 pairs of Kristine Garcia and Amaya Evans won their match in two sets: 21-11 and 21-12. Motes and Wilson won 21-7 and 21-10, and Pitts and Gary won 21-7 and 21-10 in the No. 2 and 3 pairs, respectively, to extend each of their winning streaks to four-straight matches.
