SMCC Women's Basketball Falls at Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (3-8, 0-4 ACCAC) lost 75-44 to Scottsdale CC in an ACCAC road game on Dec. 11. Freshman guard Destiny Dixon led SMCC with 12 points and added three steals while sophomore guard Leslie Aguirre totaled eight points, four rebounds, five steals, and two assists. However, the Artichokes took a 35-17 halftime lead and posted a 40-27 victory in the second half to secure the victory. 

SMCC shot 33.3 percent (18 of 54) from the field in the loss, adding 33 rebounds, seven assists, 13 steals, three blocks, and three 3-pointers. 

Dixon came off the bench to score a dozen in 14 minutes, finishing 4 of 5 from the field and adding a 3-pointer. She also had two rebounds and is averaging 11.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in 11 games. 

Aguirre made four field goals in 30 minutes and added four rebounds, five steals, and two assists in 30 minutes. She is averaging 11.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 11 games. 

Sophomore forward Rahimeh Salaam led the Cougars with seven rebounds and added three points, two blocks, and two steals in 27 minutes. She averages 10.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in seven games. 

Freshman Sadie Gardner made her season debut and finished with five points, three rebounds, and a steal in 25 minutes. Freshman DeeDee Medlock had four rebounds, four assists, and two points in 28 minutes off the bench, and sophomore guard Valery Velazquez produced seven points and a rebound in 18 minutes.
