The South Mountain Community College women's basketball (5-9) lost 102-48 to Williston State College in a non-conference home contest on Friday, Dec. 20. Sophomore Valery Velazquez led SMCC with a season-high 17 points and added five rebounds and three steals for the Cougars.
SMCC trailed 58-14 at halftime and lost 44-29 in the second half. The Cougars shot 32.8 percent (21 of 64) from the floor and added 31 rebounds, 12 assists, 13 steals, and three blocks in the defeat.
Velazquez was 7 of 11 from the floor and made three 3-pointers in 34 minutes. She is averaging 6.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in 13 contests this season.
Freshman Sadie Gardner came off the bench to post eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 22 minutes.
Sophomore Rahimeh Salaam, sophomore Nei'Shae Clegg, and freshman Destiny Dixon had five points. Salaam added four rebounds and a block, while Clegg posted four rebounds and a steal. Dixon had one rebound, one assist, and one steal.
Freshman DeeDee Medlock produced four assists and four steals in 13 minutes.
