SMCC Women's Basketball Splits with GCU Club Team, Southern Nevada

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (3-4) defeated the GCU Club Team 64-54 on Nov. 15 and lost 127-83 to the College of Southern Nevada in a pair of non-conference contests. Sophomore Leslie Aguirre led the Cougars with 19 points and seven assists, and sophomore Nei'Shae Clegg posted 10 points and 16 rebounds in the win over the Antelopes. The next day, Aguirre scored a season-high 23 and freshman Destiny Dixon finished with 20 points in a loss to the Coyotes.

Facing the Antelopes for the second time in 12 days, the Cougars pulled away in the second half to post the win. SMCC led 29-28 at halftime and won the second half 35-26. The Cougars shot 38.6 percent (27 of 70) from the floor, totaling 54 rebounds, 11 assists, and 14 steals in the win. 

Aguirre shot 9 of 18 from the field and added seven assists, six rebounds, and five steals in 38 minutes. Clegg came off the bench to finish 5 of 10 from the floor, with nine of her 16 rebounds coming on the offensive glass. 

Dixon was the third Cougar in double-figures, scoring 10 points in 36 minutes. She added nine rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Sophomores Mualyia Green and Auak Jok each had eight points. Green had four rebounds and three steals, and Jok produced three rebounds and two steals. 

Freshman DeeDee Medlock had seven points, four rebounds, and one assist, and sophomore Valery Velazquez had two points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

College of Southern Nevada Recap

SMCC trailed 62-37 at halftime and lost the third quarter 36-20 but rallied for a 26-25 fourth quarter in a 127-83 defeat to the Coyotes. The Cougars shot 38.8 percent (31 of 80) from the floor and made nine 3-pointers. They added 45 rebounds, 21 assists, and eight steals. 

Aguirre's 23 points were a new season high. She was 8 of 17 from the floor and made two 3-pointers. In 35 minutes, she added six rebounds, six assists, and one steal. 

Dixon was 7 of 15 from the floor and connected on three 3-pointers in 32 minutes. She added five rebounds and three assists. 

Medlock was the third Cougar in double-figures, scoring 14 points in 36 minutes. She added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, dished out a season-high seven assists, and had three steals. 

Clegg posted eight points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 27 minutes, and Green produced nine points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 26 miuntes. 

Velazquez came off the bench to score nine points in 29 minutes.
