SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to Chandler-Gilbert CC, Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (5-19, 0-13 ACCAC) lost 73-63 to Chandler-Gilbert CC in a Feb. 5 ACCAC road game and 74-55 to Glendale CC in an ACCAC home game on Saturday, Feb. 8. Sophomore Leslie Aguirre led SMCC with 21 points, two shy of her season high, and Auak Jok, Sadie Gardner, and DeeDee Medlock scored nine in the loss to the Coyotes. Against the Gauchos, Gardner scored 10 points, and Mualyia Green grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench in defeat.

The Cougars trailed 37-30 at halftime after winning the second quarter 20-16. However, the Coyotes won the second half 36-33 to hold on for the win. SMCC shot 39.3 percent (24 of 61) from the field and added 34 rebounds, nine assists, eight steals, and one block. 

Aguirre was 7 of 10 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line in 39 minutes. She added three rebounds, four assists, and four steals for the Cougars. 

Jok was 3 of 7 from the floor in 30 minutes and added three rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Garnder knocked down three 3-pointers and grabbed four rebounds, while Medlock shot 4 of 8 in 21 reserve minutes and added three rebounds, one assist, and one steal. 

Freshman Destiny Dixon had six points and five points, and Green added six points and six boards in 16 minutes.

The Cougars fell 74-55 to the Gauchos after trailing 43-24 at halftime. SMCC shot 33.8 percent (23 of 68) and added 51 rebounds, 16 assists, 11 steals, and three blocks in defeat. 

Gardner shot 4 of 11 from the floor in 33 minutes and connected on a pair of 3-pointers. She added three assists and two steals. 

Medlock finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and a steal in 34 minutes, while Green had five points, 11 boards, one assist, and three steals in 18 minutes off the bench. 

Valery Velazquez had seven points and five rebounds, all on the offensive glass, and Nei'Shae Clegg produced eight points, four rebounds, and one steal.

Dixon finished with eight points, five rebounds, one assists, two steals, and one block in 29 minutes.
