SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (5-17, 0-11 ACCAC) lost 88-46 to Mesa CC in an ACCAC road game at the MCC Gymnasium on Feb. 1. Freshman guard DeeDee Medlock led SMCC with 14 points, two shy of her season high, and sophomore Rahimeh Salaam and freshman Destiny Dixon added eight. However, the Thunderbirds scored at least 20 points each quarter to post the conference victory. 

SMCC trailed 21-14 after the first quarter and 42-25 at halftime. In the second half, the Thunderbirds prevailed 46-20. SMCC shot 29 percent (18 of 62) from the field and added 21 rebounds, 12 assists, four steals, and five blocks in the defeat. 

Medlock was 5 of 11 from the floor and made 4 of 5 from 3-point range in 32 minutes. She added three assists, one steal, and one block. 

Salaam was 4 of 12 from the field and added seven rebounds and a block in 26 minutes. Dixon finished with eight points, two rebounds, and one steal in 15 minutes. 

Sophomore guard Leslie Aguirre finished with six points, eight assists, four rebounds, and one steal in 32 minutes. The eight assists were two shy of her season high.
