SMCC Men's Basketball Announces Open Tryouts

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team will hold an open tryout on Wednesday, Mar. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at the SMCC Gym. The cost of the tryout is $10 and the tryout is open to any and all interested parties in joining the Cougars for the 2023-24 season.
Jaylen Wesley, Darien Allen Earn All-ACCAC Honors

Freshman Jaylen Wesley earned ACCAC Division II Freshman of the Year honors, and sophomore Darien Allen received Third Team All-ACCAC honors after outstanding 2022-23 seasons for the South Mountain CC men's basketball team. Wesley led the Cougars in scoring and rebounding for the season, averaging 15.6 points and 5. 1 rebounds in 30 games, while Allen posted 12.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in his second season for the Cougars.
SMCC Men's Hoops Concludes 2022-23 Season

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (14-16, 6-16 ACCAC) concluded its 2022-23 season with a 96-65 loss at Cochise College on Feb. 25 and an 85-76 home loss to Mesa CC on Feb. 28. The Cougars and their sophomore quintet of Darien Allen, Khabri Davis, Steven Cervantes, Abdi Odowaay and Kiai Apele fought to the bitter end and nearly played the role of spoiler while representing SMCC with honor and integrity throughout the campaign.
SMCC Men's Basketball Upsets Scottsdale CC
February 23, 2023
The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (14-14, 6-14 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 72-71 in an ACCAC road game at the SCC Gym on Feb. 22. The Cougars rallied for a 43-34 second half after trailing by eight at halftime to post the road win and deal the Artichokes a conference home loss. Sophomore Steven Cervantes came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points, freshman Jaylen Wesley finished with 14, and sophomore Khabri Davis added 12 points in the win.
Cougar Men's Basketball Downs Yavapai College
February 21, 2023
The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (13-14, 5-14 ACCAC) defeated Yavapai College 77-63 in an ACCAC home game on Feb. 18. Freshman Jaylen Wesley led SMCC with 20 points, sophomore Steven Cervantes came off the bench to add 15, and sophomores Darien Allen and Khabri Davis scored 10 as the Cougars rallied from a four-point halftime deficit.
Phoenix College Defeats SMCC Men's Basketball

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 86-65 to Phoenix College in an ACCAC home game on Feb. 15 at the SMCC Gym. Freshman Jaylen Wesley led SMCC with 26 points and 10 rebounds, but the Bears used a big scoring run at the end of the first half and denied a Cougar rally in the second half to post the road win.
Pima CC Edges SMCC Men's Basketball

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 61-60 to Pima CC in an ACCAC home game on Feb. 9 at the SMCC Gym. Sophomore Darien Allen led SMCC with 17 points, but his jumper at the buzzer fell short, and the Aztecs escaped with the one-point victory.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 72-61 to Arizona Western in an ACCAC home game at the SMCC Gym on Feb. 3. Sophomore Darien Allen and freshman Shamar Grant finished with 16 points apiece for the Cougars, but the Matadors used a 47-point second half to snap SMCC's three-game conference winning streak.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team defeated Glendale CC 83-58 in an ACCAC game on Feb. 1 at the SMCC Gym. Freshman Jaylen Wesley scored a team-high 16 points as six Cougars finished in double-figures, and SMCC extended its conference winning streak to three games.
Cougar Men's Hoops Posts Road Win at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team defeated Central Arizona 70-62 in an ACCAC road game on Jan. 28. The Cougars led 40-20 after 20 minutes and held off a Vaquero rally in the second half to post their second road win of the season. Sophomore Darien Allen led SMCC with 15 points, freshman Jaylen Wesley added 14, and two other Cougars finished in double-figures in the victory.
SMCC Men's Basketball Defeats Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 66-58 in an ACCAC game on Jan. 25 at CGCC. Freshman Jaylen Wesley led the Cougars with 25 points, freshman Jimmy Causey Jr. added 15 points and 12 rebounds, and the Cougars snapped an 11-game conference losing streak.
Cochise College Defeats South Mountain CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 98-64 to Cochise College in an ACCAC home game on Jan. 21 at the SMCC Gym. Freshman Jaylen Wesley and sophomore Khabri Davis each had 14 points to lead SMCC, but the Apaches shot 71.1 percent from the field en route to the road win.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 78-55 to Scottsdale CC in an ACCAC home game on Jan. 18. Sophomores Darien Allen and Khabri Davis led SMCC 12 points, but the Artichokes used a late rally in the first half to propel them to the victory.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 60-58 in overtime at Yavapai College in an ACCAC game on Jan. 14 at Walraven Gym in Prescott, Ariz. Sophomore Darien Allen led SMCC with 12 points, and freshman Jaylen Wesley added 11, but the Roughriders scored late baskets in regulation and overtime to secure the victory.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 62-59 to Eastern Arizona on Jan. 7 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference game at the SMCC Gym. Tied at 59-59, the Gila Monsters scored the game-winning 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds to play, and the Cougars' buzzer-beater attempt fell short.
