Eastern Arizona Edges SMCC Men's Basketball

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 62-59 to Eastern Arizona on Jan. 7 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference game at the SMCC Gym. Tied at 59-59, the Gila Monsters scored the game-winning 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds to play, and the Cougars' buzzer-beater attempt fell short. 

SMCC shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line. The Cougars totaled 24 rebounds, six assists and eight steals in the loss. 

Sophomore Steven Cervantes and freshman Aaron Johnson led the Cougars with 12 points. Cervantes had a pair of 3-pointers and a rebound, while Johnson was 6-of-8 from the field with five rebounds in 15 minutes. 

Freshman Jaylen Wesley finished with 11 points and led SMCC with seven rebounds. He also had two assists and two steals in 37 minutes. Sophomore Darien Allen had six points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 23 minutes. 

Sophomore Khabri Davis had six points, and freshman Shamar Grant added four points off the bench.
