SMCC Men's Basketball Falls to NMMI, Southern Nevada

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (3-4) lost 75-74 to the New Mexico Military Institute on Nov. 15 and 82-71 to Southern Nevada on Nov. 16 in a pair of non-conference contests. Sophomore Cash Callaway scored a season-high 29 points, including seven 3-pointers, and freshman Jayden Potts scored 27, but the Broncos secured the win over the Cougars in the game's final moments. The next day, Potts led four Cougars in double-figures with 15 points in the loss to the Coyotes.

The Cougars and Broncos battled all night, with NMMI prevailing on a pair of free throws with just over two seconds left to play. SMCC led 39-31 at halftime but fell 44-35 in the second half. The Cougars shot 45.3 percent (24 of 53) from the floor and 50 percent (14 of 28) from 3-point range. SMCC added 28 rebounds, 14 assists, eight steals, and two blocks in the loss. 

Callaway was 8 of 16 from the field and 7 of 11 from downtown in 33 minutes. He added six rebounds, three assists, and two steals and made all six free throws. Potts was 11 of 17 from the floor and 4 of 6 from 3-point range. He added three rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes. 

Sophomore Jacob Taylor posted seven points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist in 35 minutes. Sophomore Nathan Robinson finished with four points, three rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots in 31 minutes. 

Freshman McKay Anderson came off the bench to finish with three points, three assists, two steals, and one rebound in 25 minutes.

For the second time in a week, the Cougars faced the Coyotes. SMCC trailed 37-25 at halftime but won the second half 46-45. The Cougars shot 39.3 percent (24 of 61) from the floor, adding 29 rebounds, 16 assists, nine steals, and one block in defeat. 

Potts finished 7 of 12 from the floor and made one 3-pointer in 24 minutes. He added three assists, two rebounds, and a steal. 

Callaway and freshman Drew Hoxie had 11 points apiece. Callaway knocked down three 3-pointers and added a team-high six assists and three rebounds in 27 minutes. Hoxie was 4 of 8 from the floor and added five rebounds, one steal, and one block in 27 minutes. 

Anderson was the fourth Cougar in double figures, scoring 10 points off the bench in 19 minutes. He added three steals and an assist, and freshman David Jackson had five points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 16 reserve minutes. 

Sophomore Julius Williams produced eight points, two rebounds, and two assists in 18 minutes off the bench.
