Cougar Men's Hoops Falls to Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (7-13, 2-7 ACCAC) lost 102-77 to Pima Community College in an ACCAC home game at the SMCC Gym on Jan. 22. Sophomore guard Cash Callaway set a new season high with 33 points and sophomore forward Julius Williams added 16, but the Aztecs ultimately prevailed. 

SMCC trailed 49-33 at halftime and fell 53-44 in the second half. The Cougars shot 40.3 percent (27 of 67) from the field and 46.2 percent (12 of 26) from 3-point range. They added 33 rebounds, 14 assists, five blocks, and eight steals in defeat. 

Callaway was 10 of 20 overall and 5 of 10 from downtown in 32 minutes to set a new season best. He added three rebounds, one steal and one assist. He is averaging 19.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game in 20 contests. He has scored at least 20 points 11 times and has eclipsed 30 points in three contests. Callaway has made at least five 3-pointers eight times and had a season-high seven three times. 

Williams was 6 of 10 from the floor and connected on two 3-pointers in 34 minutes. He added four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Williams has now scored at least 16 points in three straight games, and is averaging 7.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game for the season. 

Sophomore Jacob Taylor led SMCC with five rebounds and four assists. He added seven points and a steal in 28 minutes. Sophomore Nathan Robinson came off the bench to post eight points in 25 minutes and matched a season-high with five blocked shots. 

Freshman David Yourkoski also had eight points off the bench and added a rebound and a steal in 15 minutes.
