SMCC Men's Basketball Posts 77-71 Victory at Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (10-16, 5-9 ACCAC) defeated Phoenix College 77-71 in an ACCAC road game at the Phoenix College Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Sophomore Cash Callaway led the Cougars with 26 points, sophomore Julius Williams had 18 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Drew Hoxie added 13 points and five blocks as SMCC claimed the season series with the Bears. 

SMCC led 33-29 at halftime and edged PC 44-42 in the second. The Cougars shot 52.5 percent (31 of 59) from the field and added 38 rebounds, 16 assists, nine steals, and seven blocks in the victory. 

Callaway was 10 of 16 from the floor with three 3-pointers in 30 minutes. He added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Callaway has scored at least 20 points in 13 games and is averaging 19.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 26 games this season. 

Williams shot 9 of 16 in 33 minutes and grabbed seven rebounds. He dished out two assists and had one steal. In 21 games, he is averaging 8.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. 

Hoxie set a new season high with his five rejections and shot 5 of 10 from the field in 26 minutes. He added four rebounds, two steals, and one assist to his final line. Hoxie is averaging 8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 23 games. 

Freshman McKay Anderson came off the bench to lead SMCC with four assists. He also posted five points, five rebounds, and two steals in 23 minutes. Sophomore Nathan Robinson totaled six points, five rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and one steal in 20 reserve minutes. 

Sophomore Jayven Driscoll led SMCC with eight rebounds and added an assist and a steal. Freshman Brandon Mangahas had five points, two rebounds, and two assists in 13 minutes off the bench.
