SMCC Men's Hoops Falls to Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (7-10, 2-4) lost 79-69 to Chandler-Gilbert CC in an ACCAC home game on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the SMCC Gym. Sophomore guard Cash Callaway scored a season-high 31 points, including seven 3-pointers, and sophomore guard Jacob Taylor added 17. Still, the Coyotes ultimately prevailed in the two squads' first conference meeting this season. 

SMCC trailed 43-35 after 20 minutes and fell 36-34 in the second half. The Cougars shot 41.7 percent (25 of 60) from the field and 12 of 29 (41.4 percent) from 3-point range. They added 34 rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, and three blocks in the loss. 

Callaway had a stellar offensive performance, finishing 12 of 19 from the field and 7 of 12 from downtown in 32 minutes. He added three rebounds, three assists, and four steals in the contest and is now averaging 18.7 points in 17 games this season. His previous season best was 29 against New Mexico Military Institute on Nov. 15. 

Taylor was 7 of 14 from the field and 3 of 7 from 3-point range in 34 minutes to finish second on the squad with 17 points. He also posted three rebounds and one assist in the game, averaging 11.1 points and 3.1 rebounds in 17 games this year. 

Freshman Drew Hoxie was the third Cougar to finish in double-figures, scoring 10 points off the bench in 30 minutes. He led SMCC with nine rebounds and added two blocks. 

Sophomore Julius Williams was second on the team with seven rebounds and freshman David Jackson recorded four points and four rebounds.
