South Mountain CC Men's Hoops Falls to Glendale CC, Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (7-12, 2-6 ACCAC) lost 85-57 to Glendale CC on Jan. 15 and 91-78 to Phoenix College on Jan. 18 in a pair of ACCAC contests last week. Sophomore forward Julius Williams led SMCC with 16 points in the road contest with the Gauchos, and he followed that up with a season-high 19 points against the Bears. Sophomore guard Cash Callaway scored 30 points against the Gauchos, and freshman forward Drew Hoxie added 15. 

Glendale CC Recap

The Cougars fell 85-57 to the Gauchos in an ACCAC road contest on Jan. 15. They trailed 44-22 at halftime and fell 41-35 in the second half. SMCC shot 33.3 percent (20 of 60) from the field, totaling 26 rebounds, 10 assists, three steals, and six blocks in defeat. 

Williams was 6 of 11 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line with four rebounds in 27 minutes. Callaway was second on the team with 14 points, finishing 6 of 12 in 27 minutes. He added three assists, one rebound, and one steal in the loss. 

Sophomore Jayven Driscoll led SMCC with six rebounds and added four points, and Hoxie and sophomore guard Jacob Taylor scored seven points apiece. Hoxie posted five rebounds, three blocks, and one assist, while Taylor had an assist. Freshman David Yourkoski had five rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench. 

Phoenix College Recap

SMCC fell 91-78 to Phoenix College in an ACCAC home game on Jan. 18. The Cougars fell behind 48-34 in the first half but won the second half 44-43. They shot 45.6 percent (31 of 68) from the field and totaled 29 rebounds, 13 assists, 11 steals, and four blocks in defeat. 

Callaway scored a game-high 30 points, with 21 coming in the second half. He was 13 of 25 from the floor and added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 37 minutes. He is averaging 19.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 19 contests this season. 

Williams was second on the Cougars with a season-high 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting in 38 minutes. He also led SMCC with four assists and added three rebounds. 

Hoxie was the third Cougar to finish in double-figures, scoring 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting in 27 minutes. He added five rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. 

Sophomore Nathan Robinson had eight points, three rebounds, and three steals in 12 minutes off the bench.
